Subway sheets are printed on a thicker paper than one-sheets. Most contain the same artwork as the advance materials, and are almost always issued as "advances." They are most often found in subway displays. These posters can be either rolled or folded. Some collectors like the subway sheet because there are fewer of them released. Full return privileges apply. An unbelievably rare one sheet!! We know of no known recorded sales for this one sheet within the past 15 years!! Linen backed several years ago. Typical minor fold line and border touch up. On the right border there were 2 small chips that were repaired that can still be seen under close examination.
The following text is from Heritage when they sold a similar style three sheet several years ago: "While we are listing this poster as a re-issue (attributed to 1938), we are doing so because this is the current prevailing theory. No one knows for sure that this poster is from a re-issue. The prevailing argument has been, why would Gaumont-British issue original posters for a film in green duo-tone when all of their other posters at that time were released in full color? That being said, the original 1933 British posters for The Ghoul were printed in dark green and black. So our logical question is, if they could print them in England in green duo-tone, why not the U.S. as well? Also, this poster does not have "re-issue" or "re-release" printed anywhere on it. Furthermore, no one has ever seen paper that is clearly marked as re-issue, much less as 1938 reissue and no one has a pressbook that would give a definitive answer. The bottom line is - no one knows for a fact that this poster is original or reissue. Could the original posters be "lost" in the same way the print was for so many years? Or are they lurking in some crypt... waiting to be found?" L.C. |

One of only eleven known to exist. This comes from the estate of Billy Puzo, the brother of The Godfather author Mario Puzo. As far as we know this is the only one of the eleven posters that has been released from the estate. Created in 1972 before the film was released, this was intended to be used as the main artwork for the one sheet and other posters. They decided not to use this artwork and instead went with the puppeteer design. On flat stock paper. Not in perfect shape but still very presentable. Unbelievably rare with very few recorded sales. There are less than a handful of these known to exist.
Appears NM-Mint Flawless. Armando Seguso artwork. Prior to paper backing this poster had minor wear on the folds, minor paper loss in the bottom left corner extending slightly into the background, and a semi-circular tear in the lower left that extended around 6" into the back of the bed, with some surface paper loss on that tear. The poster had tape stains, tears, and small surface paper loss around the edges (from removal of the tape), but fortunately, none of it was in either star's image, except for a tear in the top border that extended 2 1/2", into Gable's hair. The poster had a circular snipe glued to the background area to the right of Gable. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paper backing. An extremely talented restorer performed really first rate restoration to the above defects, and the poster displays really superbly. Anyone looking at it will be impressed by its excellent appearance, and its restoration is in the borders and background areas, and a tiny amount in Gable's hair, and a small amount in the upper part of the bed at lower left. Looks beautiful! Well preserved. Extremely rare! From the original release in 1939.

* As an all-time nut of "The Graduate," there are at least (15)
fifteen known versions of the one-sheet issued in 1967-1968. "Pre-Oscar"
posters are more desired, which appeared with the film's premiere in NYC and LA
on December 21, 1967 - and used until the Oscars on April 10, 1968. Look
closely for distinctive Embassy Pictures or Avco Embassy markings - vs. markings
featuring the United Artists' / "T" Transamerica logo.
* UA / Transamerica posters appeared AFTER the Embassy posters in early 1968.
Some collectors refer to Transamerica posters for "The Graduate" as
international posters - but this is not true. Some "Graduate" one-sheets with
the Transamerica logo have NSS 68/26 markings. For now, the consensus is any
"Graduate" 1-sheet with an NSS 68/26 mark on the front and/or stamped on the
back was for the U.S. market. Any 1-sheet without the NSS 68/26 mark was for
the international market. First issue one-sheets do NOT have the UA /
Transamerica logo.
* Parenthetically, in the post-NSS era, there is confusion and controversy with
posters of contemporary movies without MPAA ratings. Not all posters without an
MPAA rating are international posters, e.g., the best that I know is the "Saving
Private Ryan" double-sided advance one-sheet with the lone soldier image and no
MPAA "R" rating. This is NOT an international poster unless the UIP
distributor's logo appears in the lower credits. The lone soldier advance
WITHOUT an MPAA rating nor a UIP logo - was displayed at theaters throughout the
U.S. during the winter and spring of 1998, up to its domestic release on July
24, 1998. I put first issue U.S. "Saving Private Ryan" 1-sheets in the "this
film has not yet been rated" category of advance issue movie posters.

PRINTER'S PROOF Before a poster is printed in large quantities, the printer prints a limited number of test posters. Commonly, they leave the color chart on the left edge of the poster. Sometimes they print in a single color or a combination of just a few colors. These are then shown to people in a position to "OK" them. Once they are approved, the final posters are printed and the proofs normally are destroyed. A printer's proof is far more rare than a regular one sheet poster, and there is no fear of purchasing a reproduction.

THE GREAT ESCAPE INTERNATIONAL ONE SHEET MOVIE POSTER RARE MOTORCYCLE JUMP STYLE 1963

Vintage movie posters do not get any better than this. This poster is spectacular! Movie posters almost never feature the best scene from the film. Here is a poster that features one of the greatest scenes in cinema history......Steve McQueen jumping the barbed wire fence in The Great Escape.
There has been a lot of speculation among expert poster dealers and collectors about this poster over the years. Some believe it is a completely bogus poster that was made to deceive, others believe it is a re-release poster from the 70’s or 80’s. Sotheby's described it is a concept one sheet that was never distributed to theaters. Some believe it is an international one sheet.
Everything we know is below. After carefully examining all the evidence we believe it is an international one sheet from the original release in 1963.
We will refer to it as GEMJP (Great Escape Motorcycle Jump Poster).
All the GEMJPs that we know of that have sold publicly have been folded as issued and measure 27” x 39.5”.
The five that we have owned were acquired from different sources.
The paper it is printed on is semi gloss stock, which is not common for early 1960s cinema posters as most one sheets from that era were printed on flat stock. There are however several other examples from that era that are printed on semi gloss stock including Lolita (1962), Goldfinger (1964), 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (R1963), One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961), and My Fair Lady (1964).
The printing quality is perfect.
There are certainly not a lot of them floating around.
Not many have been sold publicly. As of January 2023 we only know of 9 that have appeared at major auctions within the past 30 years.
The detailed photo of the GEMJP sold by Bonham's in 2014 clearly shows “extra folds”, something that is commonly seen in older one sheets that were folded an extra time for storage by theater managers. We also own an unbacked one with extra folds. This strongly suggests that they were indeed sent to theaters and not just a concept one sheet.

NSS Stamp On Reverse The GEMJP does not have any NSS markings on the front. The reverse has an NSS stamp with the title and year that is typical for this early 1960's era. During this era when a film was re-released and new posters were printed the NSS stamp had an R in front of the year. This poster does not have an R in front of the year. In fact, we are not aware of any other re-release one sheet from this era with an NSS stamp on the back that does not have an R in front of the year.
We have personally seen four different linen backed GEMJPs and one unbacked one. Our unbacked one does have a typical NSS stamp on the reverse.

This is incontrovertible proof that it is an authentic international one sheet from 1963.
Is it a fake? No, it is not a fake. Some conspiracy theorists believe the GEMJP is a fake poster, one created to deceive the collecting community. We believe there is no evidence to support this theory. When examining the quality of the poster in person one can easily see that it was not created/printed cheaply. Someone would have to have spent an enormous amount of time, energy, and money to create these.....and then they would have just printed a few of them and trickled them out to the world one at a time over 30+ years. Not a very profitable or practical scheme. We first became aware of its existence about 20 years ago. It does not show up often. Nobody would go to the trouble of faking such a beautiful poster in clearly such a small quantity.
Is it a re-release? There are some who believe the GEMJP is a re-release poster, an alternative style compared to the known 1970 re-release one sheet or the known 1980 re-release one sheet. This does not make any sense. There is ZERO reason to create two different style one sheets for a re-release.
Why does the GEMJP differ so much from the two known re-release one sheets? (no UA logo, no 1970 or 1980 copyright date). Why would they make a second style re-release one sheet? They would not. It is extremely unlikely. And even if they did make an alternative style re-release one sheet in either 1970 or 1980......many more of them certainly would have surfaced by now.
The 1970s' and 1980 re-release posters are clearly identifiable as re-release posters showing different artwork and markings including the United Artist's logo.

The re-release three sheet from 1970 is the ONLY other poster to feature the motorcycle artwork in full color and it is clearly labeled as a re-release and has the United Artist's logo. The GEMJP is not marked as a re-release and does not have the United Artist's logo.

It is also a different size (27" x 41") compared to the GEMJP (27" x 39.5").
And let us go against all logic and assume for a second that the GEMJP is a re-release one sheet. It is still unbelievably rare with very few examples ever surfacing AND it would still be at least 40 to 50 years old. There are very few instances where a re-release one sheet is rarer and more desirable than the original release one sheet. The North By Northwest 1966 re-release one sheet is a great example. This beautiful Hitchcock poster sells for a lot more than the original release one sheet. This GEMJP would fall into this category.
A GEMJP sold at Sotheby's in March 2020. They are the ones who described it as a concept poster. "This extremely rare piece is a concept poster, which although printed, was never distributed. It features the great image of Steve McQueen on his motorbike, jumping the prison barricade. This international concept poster has only surfaced a few times."
Although Sotheby’s described the GEMJP as never distributed, the GEMJP sold by Bonham’s in 2014 appears to have been theater used due to the extra folds.

The motorcycle jump artwork did indeed exist back in 1963 as it appears in the original The Great Escape pressbook from 1963. It is under ART STILLS and in the magazine ad section on page 7.

All this evidence virtually eliminates the possibility of this being a fake or a re release poster. Our conclusion is that the GEMJP is a rare international one sheet from the original release in 1963. Very few were likely printed and certainly not many have surfaced.
We do not know how many there are. We have had five in our archive and we know another collector who has one and another dealer/auctioneer is rumored to own one. The Prop Store sold one in 2019, Bonham’s sold one in 2014, and Sotheby's sold one in 2020 and another one several years ago. That makes 11 or less that we know of. Certainly, there are more out there but in the past 30 years not many have come to light.

jkn Very seldom can we offer a true "one of a kind" item. This is what those in the print shop at Gore Graphics called a "make-ready" or "set-up" one sheet. They took whatever paper was lying around (in this case it was a proof for "THE GREATEST") and ran it through the press upside down for the poster they were getting ready to print ("VIVA KNIEVEL!"). It is a double sided poster featuring an Advance one sheet for "THE GREATEST" and a two color proof for "VIVA KNIEVEL!" You will not find another one of these for sale anywhere.....ever! This is an incredible piece of movie poster history saved from the trash over 30 years ago! Straight from a former employee who used to work at Gore Graphics in the 1970's. Gore Graphics printed many of the posters for the National Screen Service. We have a few other proofs from this source, and like this one, some of them are one of a kind! About Printer's Proofs: Before a poster was printed in large quantities, the printer would print a limited number of test posters. Commonly, they would leave the color chart on the left edge of the poster, which added an extra inch to the width of the poster (which explains why the poster measures 28" x 41"). These would then be shown to people in a position to "OK" them. Once they were approved, the final posters would be printed and the proofs normally were destroyed. A printer's proof is far more rare than a regular one sheet poster, and there is no fear of purchasing a reproduction. |
