Our Posters Are Guaranteed
Authentic For Life

In the world of collectibles, authenticity is everything. At CineMasterpieces, it is our bedrock principle. We sell only original, authentic, theatrical-release movie posters. We do not sell, trade, or deal with fakes of any kind. This is an unconditional promise.

Every poster in our collection undergoes a rigorous, multi-point inspection by our founder, David Lieberman. With over 25 years of hands-on experience, we examine paper stock, printing methods (e.g., stone lithography), size, and provenance to definitively distinguish original posters from fakes. We are experts at identifying the subtle markers of authenticity that other sellers often miss.

Certificate of Authenticity

When you purchase posters from CineMasterpieces, your investment and its authenticity are fully documented. Upon request, we provide a free Certificate of Authenticity (COA) with any poster you buy. This certificate serves as a written guarantee that your item is an original movie poster, giving you added confidence and peace of mind.

To add a COA to your order, simply mention it in the “notes” field at checkout or contact us by email. Please note that our COA guarantees authenticity only, not condition. A grade is not included because the poster is not sealed in a graded slab, and its condition may change over time, making a printed grade unreliable.

CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY
We can provide you with a FREE Certificate of Authenticity for every poster you buy. We will put in writing that we guarantee it to be an Original Movie Poster. You must ask for it though. So when you order, just mention that you want one and we will include it in the shipment. A C.O.A will not have a condition/grade. It makes no sense to add a grade because the item will not be sealed in plastic like a coin or a comic book. The condition can easily change over time so a grade would be meaningless.

Authenticating Original Movie Posters and Other Vintage Posters
David A. Lieberman, CineMasterpieces.com
How can you tell if a movie poster is "original", "real", or "authentic"? How do you know the posters we are selling are real and not reproductions? Can you tell me if my poster is original?
Please forgive us if we have responded to your email by directing you to this link. We get these questions all the time, often several times a day. We have been handling vintage posters for over 30 years; we know what to look for. We only sell originals! A free Certificate of Authenticity is available for each poster we sell.
Since 2003, this site has been used as a reference by people and businesses from all over the world. We give advice to auction houses, The History Channel TV shows Pawn Stars and American Pickers, museums, beginning and advanced collectors, memorabilia dealers, home theater designers, and everyday poster buyers worldwide. We have helped thousands of people determine whether their posters are originals or reproductions. They constantly use our site for authentication and information. We have written several articles comparing known originals to "fakes". Some titles we have covered include: Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Revenge of the Jedi, Pulp Fiction, Jaws, Blade Runner, Spider-Man, Saving Private Ryan, Scarface, as well as many others.
If we say a vintage poster is "original", you can bet your bottom dollar that it is!
The only way we can possibly tell if your poster is authentic is if you send it to us or if you email us extremely detailed photos of the front and back. Please be advised that we may not be able to give a definitive answer even with detailed photos.
Sorry, but we will no longer give free movie poster authentication and grading tips by phone or by email. Please do not call and ask us to help you authenticate or grade a poster if you are not willing to send it to us for an evaluation. We will not authenticate or grade posters over the phone or by email. We can only help you if you wish to do business with us. If you'd like to send posters to us to authenticate so we can buy them from you or put them on consignment, please do! If we have it in our possession, we can authenticate it.
Please don't ask us, "I saw this other poster for sale from someone else, can you tell me if it is real?" or "Can you tell me how to tell if this poster is real/original?" We get questions like this several times a day. We honestly just do not have the time to walk people through authenticating a poster.
Do you have a Breakfast at Tiffany's one sheet? BEWARE OF UNDERSIZED REPRODUCTIONS
We frequently receive phone calls and emails about this one-sheet poster. If you have one of these and it has never been folded, and it does not measure almost exactly 27" x 41", IT IS A REPRODUCTION with little to no real value. This poster has been reprinted several times in the past 50+ years and these reproductions usually measure approximately 26" x 40" or smaller. It does not matter if yours says Copyright 1961 and if it has the NSS number 61/262 on the bottom, as the reproductions have copied this information to make them appear more authentic. For your poster to be original, it will have to measure almost exactly 27" x 41", be printed on flat (not glossy) paper, have an NSS stamp on the back, and it will have been folded at one time like a normal one-sheet from that era.
Do you have a Jailhouse Rock one sheet? THIS POSTER HAS BEEN REPRODUCED MANY TIMES OVER THE YEARS.
It does not matter if yours says Copyright 1957 and if it has the NSS number 57/533 on the bottom, as the reproductions have copied this information to make them appear more authentic. For your poster to be original, it will have to measure almost exactly 27" x 41", be printed on flat (not glossy) paper, have an NSS stamp on the back, and it will have been folded at one time like a normal one-sheet from that era.
The reproductions are almost always ROLLED, never folded, and they DO have the NSS info at the bottom so they look authentic. These reproductions are usually undersized and never measure a full 27" x 41" like originals do. If your poster does not measure a full 27" x 41" and it has never been folded, it is definitely a reproduction with zero value.
Does your poster say Portal Publications?
Is your poster a minty white, new-looking 14" x 36" insert from the 1970s or 80s from a popular movie?
Is your poster a STAR WARS one sheet?
Is your poster a REVENGE OF THE JEDI one sheet?
REVENGE OF THE JEDI
The title of Episode Six was originally Revenge of the Jedi. It was changed to Return of the Jedi just prior to the film's release in 1983. The Revenge of the Jedi posters, along with the Star Wars style A, are the most copied, commemorated, and counterfeited movie posters in history.
There are at least four different bootlegs/reprints of the Revenge of the Jedi Teaser Advance One Sheet. We know of three different bootlegs of the dated version and one of the "no date" version. There were two original versions of the Revenge of the Jedi Teaser Advance One Sheet printed in 1982. Both versions are documented on the Lucasfilm-authorized 1985 Official Star Wars Checklist poster. The first "NO DATE" version was printed only once and was issued exclusively to movie theaters. This version was issued early on before 20th Century Fox had a release date for the film, so the poster does not have "Coming May 25, 1983 to your galaxy" at the bottom. This version is much, much rarer than the second poster with the date. Both posters were issued rolled and folded.
The Official Star Wars Checklist poster states that there were only a small handful of the "NO DATE" posters made; then Fox decided on a release date for the film, and a second version of the poster WITH THE DATE was printed. Shortly after the second poster was printed, Lucas decided to change the title to Return of the Jedi, and the poster was recalled/pulled from advertising use. Lucas took the remaining leftover stock WITH THE DATE and issued them for purchase through the Star Wars fan club directly to collectors.
According to the L.A. Times, quoting Kelly Miller (national advertising production manager at 20th Century Fox at the time), there were about 8,800 Revenge of the Jedi posters printed. 6,800 of these went to the Star Wars fan club where they were sold for $9.50 each. The Times did not say how many were dated and how many were undated, but other sources have speculated that only about 200 (some say less than 100) of the "NO DATE" version were printed.
Because of all the fakes out there, it is EXTREMELY difficult to find a REAL one. We have handled dozens over the years, so we know exactly what to look for. The first bootlegs appeared early on in 1983, just a few months after they were recalled. These bootlegs are more than 20 years old now. Many people who have them are convinced that their bootlegs are real because they got them so long ago around the time of the film's release. We have people sending us these fakes constantly for authentication. It is terrible having to break the news to them.
Since there are at least four different bootlegs, it is hard for most people to tell if they have an original. One of the first bootlegs was copied from a folded poster, so the fold lines are evident. Some smart counterfeiters then folded these to try and pass them off as real. Many times the fold lines don't match up. Other bootlegs are undersized. Another version has a lighter area on the bottom right corner described as "clouds" by some people. All bootlegs are on different paper and the colors and sharpness are "off". For an expert, when compared side by side with a known original, they are easy to spot. Pictures of the "cloudy" bootleg show it is undersized and measures 26 3/4" x 39 15/16". It is printed on slightly thicker than normal paper.
This poster ranks right up there with the Star Wars Mylar and Happy Birthday one sheets, as well as holding its own against the original concert poster. If you can find a real one, it is well worth cherishing.
Back in 2017, I (David A. Lieberman - Owner of CineMasterpieces) had a conversation with one of our clients who used to work for Industrial Light and Magic. He worked on all the original Star Wars films. Now, most of us have heard the story about how George Lucas changed the name from RETURN OF THE JEDI to REVENGE OF THE JEDI because Jedi do not take revenge. And that's pretty much it. I've never heard any details about this story until now. Back when they were filming RETURN OF THE JEDI, several members of the cast and crew including George Lucas, Anthony Daniels, our client, and several others were flying on a private plane to Death Valley to shoot some of the Jabba the Hutt scenes. Our client says he remembers a conversation was started about the film's title by the producer Howard Kazanjian. He suggested that Jedi don't take revenge, and then everyone else started chiming in saying, "Yeah George... Jedi don't take revenge!" and they all ganged up on George and harassed him until he finally saw the light and changed the title.

SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
By David A. Lieberman
There are two known versions of this double-sided one-sheet. Although no evidence really exists to prove that one of the versions is a bootleg, most longtime experienced collectors believe it is, so they stay away from it.
The suspected bootleg has "pixelated" fonts, measures 39 7/8" x 26 7/8", has a backside almost as dark as the front, and the paper is slightly thinner than the original. The known original has crisp printing for the fonts, measures 40" x just over 27", has a backside that is noticeably lighter than the front, and the paper is slightly thicker than the suspected bootleg. If you look at the close-up comparison image, you'll see the line between "DREAMWORKS" and "PICTURES" is barely visible on the suspected bootleg.
Without trying to legitimize the suspected bootleg version, please note that there really is NO evidence that it is a bootleg. It could possibly be an authorized second printing. Since no one really knows its origin, we suggest collectors avoid it. Also, please note that we are not selling the suspected bootleg, so we have no vested interest in proving it to be original.
UPDATE: In February 2009, we received a suspected bootleg version from a consignor who used to be a theater manager at Regal's Wilson Cinema 6 in Wilson, NC. He claims to have received it directly from the distributor prior to the film's release. This person is not a collector and really doesn't know much about movie posters, so he has no reason to lie to us.
UPDATE MARCH 2009: A note we received from a respected longtime collector:
"I personally believe that the slightly pixelated version is an authorized alternate printing and not a bootleg. I have one of each in my possession and while there is an obvious difference between the two, I see no other evidence. Just because it is an alternate printing that is a little inferior in quality to the known original does not automatically make it a bootleg. Was there really tremendous demand for this title by collectors when the film came out to warrant an unscrupulous printer to make double-sided bootlegs? I don't think so. Unlike Spider-Man, The Dark Knight, 300, and the other well-known double-sided bootlegs, there was never huge demand for this poster. Now don't get me wrong; I've seen a lot of strange things in this hobby, there is just no real hard evidence that it is a bootleg."
SPIDER-MAN
There are 3 versions of the recalled advance one-sheet:
U.S. - North American (3 MAY 2002): 26 3/4" x 39 3/4". There are double-sided and single-sided (studio issued) originals. Known reprints/bootlegs - YES (single and double sided).
International (COMING 2002): 26 3/4" or 26 15/16" x 39 11/16" or 39 5/8". There are double-sided originals. Unknown if there are single-sided originals. Known reprints/bootlegs - YES (double sided).
South American (2002): 26 3/4" x 39 3/4". There are double-sided originals. Unknown if there are single-sided originals. No known reprints/bootlegs.

A Few Tips For Authenticating Original Movie Posters
There is not one specific thing to look for when determining if a movie poster is original or not. There can be many! All posters are different, and there are different things to look for for each one. Depending on the poster and what year it is from, here are just some of the things we look for:
What is the exact size in inches?
Where did it come from? Does it come from a questionable source? Does it come from a known seller of fakes & reproductions? There are plenty of seemingly trustworthy sellers on eBay and other sites that for years have been successfully passing off fake posters as originals to new collectors.
Is it folded or rolled?
If it is from the 1970s-80s, does it have a GAU logo?
Is there an NSS number on the front? Just because a poster has an NSS number on the front does not automatically make it an "original". When a poster is copied/reproduced, the NSS number is often reproduced as well in order to make it look more authentic.
Is there an NSS stamp on the back?
Does it "look" and "feel" right? Does it smell right?
What kind of paper is it? Matte, flat, glossy, regular paper, cardstock?
Is the print quality acceptable? (Blurry or sharp?)
Is it stone or offset lithography?
Is it a popular title with known reproductions?
Are there known reprints or reproductions of it?
Is the artwork slightly cropped?
Does it say PORTAL PUBLICATIONS on the bottom border? (If it does, it is a reproduction with no real value).
Is it "minty white"? Does it look like it was printed yesterday?
Could it possibly be an original "re-release" poster?
Is it single or double sided? Just because a poster is double sided does not make it authentic. There are plenty of double-sided "fakes" for titles such as Spider-Man, The Matrix, The Dark Knight, as well as many others.
Every now and then we come across an old movie poster in great shape that seems too good to be true—one that is very old, unused, and in near pristine condition. Yes, there are Near Mint unused vintage original movie posters. If you look at other collectibles, there are coins, baseball cards, and comic books that have survived for over 50 years in Near Mint condition. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.
People send us photos all the time asking if their posters are original. We usually can't answer definitively UNLESS WE SEE THE ITEM IN PERSON. We have handled many thousands of vintage movie posters over the years. We know what to look for. More than 99% of the time we can determine without a doubt, one way or the other, if a poster is an original or a reproduction.
If you do not yet own the poster and it is for sale on eBay or another website and you are thinking of purchasing it, please use common sense. Is the price too good to be true? Is the picture provided taken at an angle and from a distance where you can't make out the details? (Crooks do this on purpose). Remember, there are plenty of seemingly trustworthy sellers on eBay with PERFECT 100% Positive Feedback that have been successfully selling fake posters to newbies since the 1990s. No one can stop them. For more information about these rip-off artists, please see our other articles. Also, try Googling "fake movie posters" where the results will lead you to discussions on movie poster message boards about these thieves.
Does the seller run PRIVATE listings/auctions on eBay? This is a big red flag! Dishonest sellers use PRIVATE listings so their buyers' identities remain hidden. Before these crooks switched their listings/auctions to PRIVATE, other honest collectors would contact the buyers telling them they had been ripped off. Having PRIVATE listings/auctions prevents these good guys from contacting newbies who have been scammed.
Measure your one-sheet poster exactly. Usually, a one-sheet will measure 27" x 40" or 27" x 41". If yours measures 26" x 39" or 24" x 36", it is most likely a reproduction.
Please do not contact CineMasterpieces and ask us to help authenticate your poster if you are not willing to send it in and do business with us.
